Rare Surgery in King Abdulaziz Hospital

A medical team in King Abdulaziz hospital in the NGHA - Al-Ahsa succeeded in enlarging the bladder of a 12 year old girl. The girl suffered from a birth defect that presented in a small bladder resulting in recurrent urinary infections. She had to be admitted to the hospital more than three times a year. The infections had also affected her growth. The operation lasted for five hours and was a success.

Dr. Bandar Al Knawy the CEO of National Guard Health Affairs and the President of King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences said: “The girl is stable and in good health now after suffering from severe depression along with her paraplegia as well as lack of urine and stool control, resulting from a water cyst in her lower back, however, the procedure results are reassuring.”

The Regional Executive Director of the NGHA in the Eastern Province Dr. Ahmed Alarfj said: "The girl was admitted after undergoing a number of procedures in several other hospitals, but they were not successful. However, King Abdulaziz hospital had received her a year ago and had performed the necessary examinations and checkups. She was then referred to the urology clinic for the diagnosis and follow-up.” The girl suffered from difficult psychological and health problems and had to change her catheter every four hours making it difficult for her to attend school.

The Consultant in Urology Surgery and the chief of the medical team Dr. Mohammed Sammour pointed out that the patient’s small bladder suffered from high pressure which in turn caused pressure to the kidneys, scarring the kidney tissues. Moreover, the patient had been using incorrect medications, thus after accurate diagnosis, it showed that the girl has a neurogenic spastic bladder of a 70 cm water pressure and a bladder of a 70 cm.

The procedure was conducted to enlarge the bladder in order to alleviate the pressure on the kidneys. Furthermore, the procedure worked to reroute the urine to the navel so that the bladder can be emptied through the navel without any assistance.

Dr. Sammour said: "We had to  enlarge the bladder, reroute the upper left part to the right urethra then stitch back the right urethra to prevent the loop back. The appendix was manufactured as a channel to the naval.”  The procedure is one of the rarest and advanced surgeries and resulted in no infections. The kidneys are functioning normally and the growth rate is expected to improve after the infections are cured.
