The Neurophysiology Center and Neurology division at King Abdul-Aziz Medical City in Jeddah has announced the opening of the new Autonomic Laboratory Unit at KAMC-Jed. The autonomic unit is the first autonomic lab in the region.
Dr. Yasser Aladdin, director of Neurophysiology center, reported that the autonomic unit comprises validated batteries of tests to assess the evolutional nervous system with premier measurements of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. The assessment paradigm includes specialized tests for peripheral sympathetic adrenergic innervation that participate in the control of systemic blood pressure and cholinergic sympathetic innervation which mediates sweat functions. The test batteries also comprise dedicated tools to evaluate the cardiovagal innervation and assess the integrity of baroreflex responses.
Dr. Yasser indicated that the autonomic unit will be dedicated to patients with autonomic failure secondary to orthostatic intolerance, orthostatic tachycardia syndrome, peripheral autonomic neuropathies, pure autonomic failure, or central autonomic failure, including patients with primary neurodegenerative disorders.
