Dr. Ahmed Al Ferayan, Neurosurgery Consultant and Head of the multidisciplinary team assured that the twins (Rana and Ranim) are getting well and communicating normally with each other and the rest of the staff. In addition, their wounds have healed completely without any signs of infections.
Currently, the twins are undergoing physical, psychological and rehabilitation therapy, their arms and legs movements are normal as well plus both are wearing helmets to protect their heads. The twins are expected to walk inr two months.
Dr. Al Ferayan said that Rana underwent a Successful skin grafting surgery on Tuesday, conducted by Dr. Manaf Al Azzawi and Dr. Nasser Ahudiab from Department of Plastic Surgery.
Pointing out that the twins will undergo a skull grafting surgery after 3 months, in order to reconstruct their skulls and heads.
This successful separation surgery was conducted last month at King Abdulaziz Medical City, Ministry of National Guard – Health Affairs in Riyadh.
It is noteworthy to mention that this conjoined twins operation marks the 33rd of its kind in the Kingdom, and was a major challenge to the capabilities of the Saudi medical team due to the complexity of the case and the extent in which the twin’s heads were conjoined.
