The Ministry of National Guard - Health Affairs, began using the latest CyberKnife Robotic Radiosurgery System which was recently inaugurated by H.E. Chief Executive Officer of Ministry of National Guard - Health Affairs, Dr. Bandar Al Knawy recently.

The non-invasive alternative to surgery will be a significant addition to Radiation Therapy Department marking complete therapeutic radiology solutions in King Abdulaziz Medical City in Riyadh.

Deputy Chairman of Oncology and Radiotherapy Section Head, Dr. Abdulrahman Hadb said that the device will immensely help in easing the pain of patients thus making the treatment courses much easier through the use of robotic radiosurgery system which delivers beams of high dose radiation to tumors with extreme accuracy unmatched by other radiation therapy and radiosurgery systems. In addition, the device is considered a non-invasive alternative to surgical intervention and fewer complications, especially for cases where surgical intervention is not possible. Most importantly, the CyberKnife does not require rigid head-frames that are screwed into the patient’s skull to minimize any movement;  instead, it relies on sophisticated tracking software, allowing for a much more comfortable and non-invasive treatment.

In addition, some radiosurgery systems can only treat tumors in the head, However, the CyberKnife System has unlimited reach to treat a broad range of tumors throughout the body.  including the prostate, lung, brain, spine, liver, pancreas, and kidney. The device is operated by a medical team consisting of radiotherapy consultants, physicists and  radiotherapy technicians who have been trained in Canada and  the united states of America.

Last but not least, Dr. Abdulrahman Hadb added that CyberKnife System can treat both primary and secondary tumors, as well as arteriovenous malformation, where a surgical intervention can involve high risks. Another feature the CyberKnife System has is the ability to treat tumors outside the head, such as spinal cord and liver tumors.
