Ministry of National Guard – Health Affairs represented by Imam Abdulrahman Al Faisal Hospital – Dammam, in collaboration with King Saud Bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences and Prince Mohammed Bin Abdulaziz Hospital – Al Madinah has organized the “22nd Diabetes Care Course” on Thursday 10th of April 2014. The course was held in the Auditorium in the Administrative Building at Prince Mohammed Bin Abdulaziz Hospital.
The course which was presented by highly experienced doctors and specialized researchers in the diabetes care field aimed to raise the awareness level regarding diabetes and relevant treatment methods that target the medical staff in Prince Mohammed Bin Abdulaziz Hospital in Al Madinah.
The course has addressed, through its 8 workshop sessions, several subjects regarding diabetes care and diabetic patients. It was initiated by highlighting the pattern of changes in the diabetic patient’s lifestyle. Furthermore, it included several topics such as methods and levels of diabetes treatment, diabetes effect on pregnancy and heart diseases, as well as the chronic complications of diabetes, and Dyslipidemia in diabetes.
Moreover, the course contributed significantly in increasing the medical staff awareness about diabetes care levels through the workshop “Diabetes Care Standards”. Furthermore, the course was 7 CME hours accredited.
On the other hand, Dr. Reem Al Amoudi, a Dietitian and Diabetes Consultant and the course Supervisor, emphasized on the importance of early and quick action to prevent diabetes. This can be applied through educating people about diabetes risks and identifying preventive measures.
Furthermore, Dr. Al Amoudi added that diabetes represent a serious threat to societies that ignore treating it. She also referred to the diabetes latest statistics which showed that Saudi Arabia has became amongst the top 10 countries that have the highest rates of diabetic patients which is 24% of the Saudi population. She added that studies expect the percentage of diabetic patients in the Middle East to rise to about 52.8% by 2030, which makes the ratio 1:2.
Dr. Alamoudi also discussed several health risks on diabetic patients and on the infants of diabetic mothers. She assured that there are many ways which are scientifically proven to help in preventing diabetes. For instance, exercising for at least 150 minutes a week can prevent diabetes by 58%, this is along with eating healthy food and avoid fast food.
At the end of the course Dr. Al Amoudi thanked and appreciated the management of Prince Mohammed Bin Abdulaziz Hospital for hosting the course. She also expressed special gratitude for Dr. Waleed Alyafee, Executive Medical Director and Dr. Tariq Khashuggi, Deputy Executive Medical Director, PMBAH.
