Under the patronage of Her Royal Highness Princess Adelah bint Abduallah bin Abdulaziz, experts on domestic violence will hold their meeting next Saturday, the 16th of May 2009 in Makarim Hall – Riyadh Marriott.

The conference will be organized by the National Family Safety Program and the National Guard Health Affairs.

Participating as a keynote speaker, the Minister of Justice Dr. Mohammad bin Abdulkareem AL-Iesa will discuss the role that the Ministry of Justice will play in dealing with domestic violence.

A number of experts and professionals in preventing domestic violence will attend the meeting from different ministries as well as relevant governmental and civil institutions in the Kingdom.

This conference aims to continue the success that had followed the previous domestic violence conference which was held in the Kingdom last year. Furthermore, it will discuss in its roundtable the main obstacles that face domestic violence prevention and find the best solutions. Officials from all relevant sectors will also participate in preparing a mission to deal with domestic violence in Saudi Arabia, and specialists will the exchange their experience on the effects of prevention, intervention and rehabilitation in cases of domestic violence.

Some of the most important recommendations taken from the

1st Conference:

  • Acknowledge the existence of domestic violence in Saudi Arabia and the urgency of preventing it.
  • Stressing on the Islamic Sharia values and the pushing out any customs that promote domestic violence or accept it.
  • Criminalization all types of domestic violence and the carrying out punitive sanctions to the abuser.
  • Speeding up the issuance of a comprehensive system to reduce domestic violence in Saudi Arabia put into effect, compulsory reporting the protection of the abused and punishing the perpetrators.
  • Establishing departments that deal with the prevention and response to domestic violence in all government ministries and institutions in the Kingdom.
  • Training the professionals who deal with cases of domestic violence in the various sectors in the Kingdom as an integrated multi-disciplinary team.
  • Requiring security workers to receive all complaints of domestic violence and respond to them without discrimination or prejudice and providing special departments for women.
  • Activating family courts to deal with cases of domestic violence and consulting expert from all disciplines.
  • All relevant sectors must comment to deal with domestic violence cases, such as: the police and courts and provide protection, privacy and compassion for these victims.
  • Monitoring budgets adequate to prevent and address domestic violence, and harness the resources to eradicate its social roots; for example: poverty, unemployment and ignorance.
  • Providing health, psychological and social care for domestic violence victims through the most effective treatment and rehabilitation programs.
  • A national awareness that is inclusive to individuals as well as government and public institutions regarding the rights of family members. Also, to help the groups most vulnerable to domestic violence in protecting themselves.
  • Including family rights and domestic violence prevention in the school curriculum in all levels of education to ensure that the school environment is free of violence.
  • Creating programs that focus on soon to be wed couples that deal with solving family problems through dialogue.
  • Via a work ethic, require the media to consider the rights of children, women and elderly who are victims of domestic violence and to maintain their privacy and insure that their rights were not violated.
  • The National Family Safety Program to hold an annual meeting of experts on domestic violence and to follow up on the enforcement of the recommendations and discuss the achievements and obstacles that must be overcome.
  • Adopting a day each year to address the prevention of domestic violence in the Kingdom.
