
Expanding operation and recovery rooms is considered one of the most important stages of developing patient’s health care services in King Abdulaziz Medical City – Jeddah. In the new phase, bed count has increased from 4 to 10 beds which, in turn, will help significantly in accommodating a larger number of patients.
The development course of action included making the recovery rooms fully equipped with the latest, state of the art machines and equipments which will facilitate the process of closely monitoring critical patients following surgical procedures by anesthesiologists and the nursing staff.
Furthermore, the recovery rooms are currently equipped with an early alert device which enables the nursing team to call in for an emergency team in a timely manner, as well as an Electronic Medication Dispenser linked to the central pharmacy at KAMC – Jeddah.
Moreover, the OR reception area has been expanded to accommodate 7 beds instead of previously 4 beds; this area is also equipped with the latest clinical technology as well as an early alert device. Additionally, the Intensive Care Unit has been expanded by 30% in order to maintain the privacy of the patients and minimize infection transmission.
Further developments in KAMC included the expansion of Critical Care in the Emergency Department with state of the art 9 fully equipped beds to provide optimal health care services for emergency, trauma cases, and to accommodate more inpatients.
In addition, the strategic ER location on the highway to Makkah plays a great role in facilitating the progress of providing ER and trauma services in coordination with medical evacuation, utilizing ambulance services to transport patients to and from KAMC as well as launching a communications operation within the ER to report emergency cases to other health sectors and the Red Crescent to be received, which includes a number of ER and trauma Saudi Consultants 3 of which are currently on scholarships specializing in emergency medicine and ten paramedics are currently enrolled in postgraduate critical care and trauma programs.
