Based on the directives of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, the medical and surgical team will perform the Saudi conjoined twins (Eylan & Eleen) separation operation on Thursday, the 13th of October 2016 in King Abdullah Specialist Children's Hospital (KASCH) at King Abdul Aziz Medical City, Ministry of National Guard - Health Affairs -Riyadh.
The conjoined twins, who weigh 3.600 kg at birth, were delivered via a caesarean section in week 34 of the pregnancy at King Abdul Aziz Medical City – Riyadh.
His Excellency Head of the Surgical and Multidisciplinary Team, Dr. Abdullah Al Rabeeah said that the twins underwent clinical tests, which showed the twins are conjoined at the abdominal wall and the lower chest and they share the liver with abdominal wall defects.
The twin Eylan suffers from congenital defects, where she has disruption in the abdominal wall and the bladder and fistula between the small intestine and bladder. She also suffers from spinal cord, vertebral column and brain abnormalities.
last but not least, H.E. Dr. Abdullah Al Rabeeah confirmed that, in light of these abnormalities, the risk rate of the operation for Eylan is up to 80%, which was the reason behind pushing the operation sooner to save Eleen ‘s life. Dr. Al Rabeeah expected the procedure to last for up to 7 hours with the participant of multidisciplinary team.
