King Abdulaziz Medical City - Riyadh held the closing ceremony of the 2nd group of performance improvement projects on Monday, the 22nd of September 2014 in the Convention Center, King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences (KSAU-HS).

HE Dr. Saad Al Mehrij, Chief Medical Officer – NGHA, gave a speech in which he extended his gratitude to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, the Crown Prince and the Deputy Crown Prince for their interest with respect to all citizens, especially the health field.

He also extended his appreciation towards the efforts of Prince Metib bin Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, Minister of National Guard and H.E. Chief Executive Officer of Ministry of National Guard - Health Affairs, President of King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences Dr. Bandar Al Knawy for following up with the constantly evolving health affairs at the Ministry of National Guard for the interest of the National Guard’s employees in particular and the people of Saudi Arabia in general.

Furthermore, Dr. Al Mehrij explained the importance of this project, which aims to improve and upgrade the patient’s services provided.

After that, Dr. Ahmad Al Aamry, Dean of College of Public Health and Health Informatics (CPHHI) - KSAU-HS and the Director of the Quality Department in King Abdulaziz Medical City - Riyadh gave a detailed presentation about the performance improvement in which he indicated the implementation of 14 projects aimed at quality development and patients’ safety that included 11 sections.

Some of the results include developing an electronic program to transfer critically ill patients from the Ambulatory Care Clinics to theIntensive Care Unit for the first time in the region. 

Moreover, the team responsible for treating cancer patients with fever was able to shorten the patients’ waiting time for vital treatments in the ER from 255 minutes to become 47 minutes, which helped in saving a lot of patients who suffer from infections and related complications, as well as raising the level of quality in the therapeutic processes.

In addition, patients on ventilators development team were able to raise the level of implementing global treatment protocols from 50% to 99% in Intensive Care Unit, which decreased the infection rates of pneumonia.

Dr. Ahmad Al Aamry also added that more than 150 health practitioners were trained in the science of development and the management of change, innovation and design, as well as pointing out that during the last period, the mortality rate has dropped from 47% to 17%, which is the lowest percentage, worldwide.

At the end of the ceremony, Dr. Al Mehrij handed over a number of certificates and plaques to the departments that have actively contributed in these projects.
