Based on the directive of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, a multidisciplinary team headed by HE Dr. Abdullah Al Rabeeah, the Iraqi Conjoined Twins underwent a series of clinical tests to determine the possibility of the separation surgery.
The test results showed that the twins are conjoined at the lower chest and abdomen in addition to sharing a liver. The multidisciplinary team decided that the separation surgery will take place on Thursday, April 10th, 2014, in King Abdulaziz Medical City, Ministry of National Guard - Riyadh.
The separation surgery is expected to last for approximately 7 hours through (7) stages. The multidisciplinary team will consist of (23) participants from different medical specialties covering Anesthesiology, pediatric surgery, plastic surgery and nursing. It’s worth mentioning that 31 separation procedures were successfully carried out since 1990 with a success rate up to (80%).
On his part, HE Chief Executive Officer of National Guard Health Affairs and General Supervisor of Royal clinics, Dr. Bandar Al Knawy, expressed his gratitude towards the fatherly and generous gesture of King Abdullah, who through his humanitarian actions and compassion has changed so many lives regardless of religion or race while stressing out King Abdulaziz Medical City promptness to host this important medical event.
