A statement was issued by the Public Relations Department and the Media Affairs at Prince Mohammed bin Abdulaziz Hospital – Al Madinah and the General Directorate of Civil Defense – Al Madinah Al Munawarah Region which stated that on Tuesday the 26th of August 2014 at 09:13, a liquefied petroleum gas tank explosion has occurred during the maintenance and the technical tests conducted by Saudi Binladin Group, the operator of the liquefied petroleum gas tank location as well as the National Gas & Industrial Co. (GASCO).
The tank was closed due to the maintenance operations taking place in the services areas in PMBAH - Al Madinah, which caused a fire in the tanks building in addition to damaging the surrounding areas.
The explosion has resulted in 5 deaths, plus some of the surrounding vehicles were damaged; however, no injuries have been reported.
Furthermore, the main hospital building which includes patients, employees and equipment was not affected by the impact and all medical services are operating smoothly. Finally, investigations are being carried away to find out the causes of this accident.
