The Pain Management Committee in King Abdulaziz Hospital, Al-Ahsa held a Pain Management Conference that included 14 scientific papers covering various disciplines and their role in the treatment.
Dr. Ahmad Al Arfaj, the Regional Executive Director of the Ministry of National Guard -Health Affairs, Eastern Region, said that the importance of this conference lies in discussing how to manage the type of pain that could delay the patient’s recovery and decrease treatment chances.
This event aims to train health providers according to the most recent studies to create a pain-free treatment plan and to educate staff and patients on how to manage pain.
Scientific papers submitted in the conference discussed several topics from different departments and sections, including Pain Physiology, the importance of body function when analyzing the pain, and the tools of which the pain can be measured in patients from different ages and clinical cases.
Furthermore, they discussed the role of the pharmacy in managing pain through selecting the type of drug and how to use it, doses and possible side effects, as well was the topic of uncontrolled pain and the role of non-pharmaceutical solutions such as neurosurgery and surgical interventions.
Participants also received a detailed explanation on postoperative pain and its management and treatment along with an overview of cancer pain, pediatrics pain management and basis of acupuncture.
Additionally, a specialized lecture addressed the role of physical therapy in pain management and the psychological assessment of pain, and their relationship with each other. Also, it discussed the role of nursing students in managing patients with different types of pain. Consequently, lecturers called for the establishment of pain management specialized curriculums.
