King Abdulaziz Medical City in Jeddah (KAMC-J), organized Osteoporosis Awareness Campaign 2014, under the slogan "Strong Bones for a Healthy Life" in collaboration with the Saudi Osteoporosis Society (SOS), on Wednesday, 29th of October 2014, in the presence of the Executive Director of Medical Services, Western Region Dr. Mansour Al Jundi, department heads and participant medical divisions. The campaign included an exhibit in the Outpatient Clinic Center started on Wednesday.
Chairman of the Organizing Committee and Consultant Internal Medicine and Adult Endocrinology, Dr. Salwa Al Aidarous stated that this campaign is the first of its kind to be held to educate the society of osteoporosis. She explained that osteoporosis is a progressive disease that affects the bones, making them fragile and leading to an increased risk of fractures.
She added that the two main causes of Osteoporosis are:
Bone tissue blocks are not formed strongly by the age of 30, before it starts losing bone tissues.
Rapid loss of bone tissues after the age of 30.
Dr. Salwa pointed out that our eating habits and lifestyle plays a great role in preventing this disease. Furthermore, the Saudi Osteoporosis Society (SOS) aims to promote awareness among the society.
Dr. Salwa listed the following simple and easy steps to help in preventing osteoporosis:
Following a healthy balance diet, since childhood that contains calcium-rich food, Vitamin D, Magnesium and Zinc.
Avoid smoking and secondhand smoking exposure.
Exercising regularly and maintaining an active lifestyle.
Also an educational forum was conducted on Friday the 31st of October 2014 at 05:00 PM in al Salam Mall to raise the publics’ awareness.
