The multidisciplinary team announced the success conjoined twins separation of (Fatma and Mashal), that was performed yesterday on the 26th of March 2016 in King Abdullah Specialist Children's Hospital (KASCH) in King Abdulaziz Medical City at the Ministry of National Guard – Health Affairs - Riyadh, pursuant to the directives of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud.
H.E. Dr. Abdullah Al Rabeeah, Advisor at the Royal Court and Head of the multidisciplinary and surgical team explain that the twins underwent a series of clinical tests, which showed the twins are conjoined at the lower chest and abdomen in addition to sharing the thoracic wall and liver, and they both weight 20 kg. Moreover, tests show the possibility of the separation surgery with a success rate up to (80%). The separation surgery was expected to last for approximately 7 hours through (6) phases. The multidisciplinary team will consist of (20) participants from different medical specialties.
The twins (Fatma and Mashal) have arrived to Riyadh on Thursday, the 3rd of March 2016, based on the directives of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, to receive the twins and their parents for all the necessary medical tests in King Abdullah Specialist Children's Hospital (KASCH) in King Abdulaziz Medical City at the Ministry of National Guard – Health Affairs – Riyadh.
This separation surgery will mark the 40th separation surgery among 94 cases submitted and reviewed to the National Program for Separating Conjoined Twins.
