With the participant of 20 specialized doctors and an 80% success rate
The Conjoined Twins’ Multidisciplinary and Surgical Teams will separate the Pakistani Conjoined Twins (Fatma and Mashal) on Saturday, the 26th of March 2016 in King Abdullah Specialist Children's Hospital (KASCH) in King Abdulaziz Medical City at the Ministry of National Guard – Health Affairs - Riyadh.
H.E. Dr. Abdullah Al Rabeeah, Advisor at the Royal Court and Head of the multidisciplinary and surgical team explain that the twins underwent a series of clinical tests, which showed the twins are conjoined at the lower chest and abdomen in addition to sharing the thoracic wall and liver, and they both weight 20 kg. Moreover, tests show the possibility of the separation surgery with a success rate up to (80%). The separation surgery is expected to last for approximately 7 hours through (6) phases. The multidisciplinary team will consist of (20) participants from different medical specialties.
The Pakistani conjoined twins (Fatma and Mashal) arrived to Riyadh on Thursday, 3rd of March 2016 based on the directive of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz to arrange for the essential medical examinations and tests for the separation. The twins were admitted directly after their arrival to King Abdullah Specialist Children's Hospital at King Abdulaziz Medical City at the Ministry of National Guard – Health Affairs in Riyadh.
This separation surgery will mark the 40th separation surgery among 94 cases submitted and reviewed to the National Program for Separating Conjoined Twins.
On the other hand, the father of the conjoined twins expressed his gratitude towards the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and wished nothing but success for the multidisciplinary medical and surgical team.
