
King Abdulaziz Hospital in the NGHA - Al-Ahsa succeeded in helping a patient in losing his excess weight which was over 250 kg. The patient left the hospital after losing 146 kg during an intensive program. Dr. Bandar Al Knawy the CEO of National Guard Health Affairs and the President of King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences said: “the success of this surgery and the therapeutic program will be added to the list of successful obesity procedures in the National Guard Health Affairs."
The patient Mohammad Al-Jezani was admitted in King Abdulaziz Hospital under the directions of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques King Abduallh bin Abdulaziz to provide necessary health care. Dr. Bandar Al Knawy added: "the patient checked out stable and in good health.”
The Regional Executive Director of the NGHA in the Eastern Province Dr. Ahmed Alarfj said: "The patient was suffering from physical and psychological problems plus shortness of breath and movements difficulties, with the application of intensive treatment programs he’s now in a good health.”
Upon the patient arrival, he underwent a series of testing and analysis to determine source of his weight gain. The director of the department of surgery at King Abdul Aziz Hospital in Al-Ahsa, Dr. Ahmed Al-Salman said: "The patient’s problem lies in several things; mainly his overweight did not allow him to stand plus a mild paralysis in his left foot.”
Dr. Al-Salman pointed out that upon the arrival of the patient the hospital set up medical and nursing teams to diagnose his condition, and after the tests, then the patient had a surgery where three-fourths his stomach was removed, diverting the stomach outlet to the small intestine plus making a hole in the colon to extract waste. When the telescope was inserted in the abdominal cavity, the surgeons could not see anything because the intestines were swollen, which made the operation very difficult. Therefore, the medical team decided to terminate the process at this point.
Then, the medical team decided to conduct a second operation after the patient loses some weight with the help of a strict diet supervised by Dr. Sawsan Abdel Hamid Lotfi. She pointed out that the weight began to diminish gradually and settled on 118 kg before the second surgery within two months. In addition to the rehabilitation for his lower limbs, exercising his lower abdominal muscles led to increasing his physical fitness. Now, he can stand and sit on his own the need of anybody’s assistance.
Dr. Salman confirmed that this surgery can only be conducted in King Abdulaziz Hospital in the NGHA - Al-Ahsa on the Middle East level especially chronic obesity that increases body mass to 92. The patient will undergo intensive follow-ups in the first year that includes screening every three months. This surgery is number 251 in this type of surgeries while the number of obesity operations is more than 450 operations.
Dr. Al-Salman pointed out that there is a real crisis of obesity sweeping the world in general and the Kingdom in particular, especially the Eastern Province where the statistics indicate the existence of 25% suffers from obesity. Obesity is very serious issue among children and young people, therefore major solutions should be presented to deliver medical awareness to face obesity.
