
Based on the directives of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, a medical multidisciplinary team headed by His Excellency the Minister of Health and Chairman of the Surgical Team, Dr. Abdullah Al Rabiah held several meetings and the twins had to undergo medical tests to evaluate their case before a surgical decision could be made to check their health and to ensure that they can be separated.
Dr. Rabiah explained that is the twins are stable and the conjunction is in the bottom of the abdomen and the pelvis, the twins share the lower fused genito-urinary system and the lower part of their digestive system. Tests show that the possibility of separating them is (70%).
Dr. Rabiah also added that the medical team had decided to perform the surgery on Thursday, September 13th, 2012 in King Abdulaziz Medical City - Riyadh which is anticipated to be done in 11 stages in 13 hours. The participating multi-disciplinary medical team consists of 28 doctors from various medical specialties such as (Anesthesia, pediatric surgery, pediatrics urology, plastic surgery, and pediatric orthopedic surgery, nursing and support departments).
On the other hand, both Dr. Rabiah and HE Dr. Bandar Al Knawy, Chief Executive Officer, NGHA thanked and appreciates the generous gesture of King Abdullah, who through his humanitarian actions and compassion has changed so many lives.
