A rare ophthalmic surgery in the field of permanent contact lenses implant was performed in King Abdulaziz Medical City – Jeddah. This surgery is being carried out for the first time in the Department of Ophthalmology at the MNGH-HA on a child. Dr. Abdullah Al-Qahtani, Assistant Professor and retinal surgery and eye tumors Consultant pointed out that the new surgical technique using biological glue known as (Glued IOL) was used, which secures the lens without sewing. He also explained that this surgical technique is considered revolutionary in placing an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) in the eye and brings hope to those who lost the eye lens or those who suffered cataract removal complications. Moreover, Dr. Abduallah added that the Department of Ophthalmology at King Abdulaziz Medical City treated several adult cases with the use of this technique, all were successful.
Speaking of modern technique in the field of eye surgery Dr. Abdullah said that placing an artificial intraocular lens (IOL) is considered a highly effective technique that has been developed in the beginning of this century, and used to improve vision in some patients who suffered from cataract, or those with myopia in which they depend on either contact lenses or eyeglasses. This technique is simply done through implanting the lens in the eye, between the cornea and iris or directly behind the iris, without removing the existing natural lens natural lens; and it enables proper light focusing function to the retina thus improving eye vision.
In conclusion, Dr. Abduallah pointed out that the Department of Ophthalmology at King Abdulaziz Medical City - Jeddah is so proud of the highly efficient staff and the integrated medical services that enables all team members to move forward in providing quality healthcare services.
