For the first time in the Middle East, unique procedure correction of an aortic regurgitation in failed homograph by core valve

The Cardiac Catheterization team in King Abdulaziz Medical City – Riyadh were able to treat an 80 years old patient who suffered from a long –term heart disease, the patient underwent 2  previous heart surgeries in the aorta, one of which was 7 months ago. However, the patient suffered a severe setback due to heart failure and constant pulmonary edema and an aortic valve calcification.

Adult Cardiology Consultant, Associate Professor in KSAU-HS and head of the multidisciplinary team Dr. Mohammed Balgaith, pointed out that the patient’s case was presented to several specialists  before he was admitted to KAMC-R, however, all of which agreed that he was in a state where he can’t handle a third heart surgery at the age of 80.  After that, the patient was transferred to KAMC-R, and following several medical check-ups, tests indicated that it was possible to perform a cardiac catheter to save his life. It’s noteworthy that this type of procedure has never been performed before in the Middle East.

Dr. Balgaith further explained that the procedure entailed the placement of an aortic valve, and 48 hours later, the patient was able to be discharged.

The medical team who performed this procedure consisted of Dr. Mohammed Balgaith,  Adult Cardiology Consultant and an Associate Professor in KSAU-HS, Dr. Kamal Ayoub, Adult Cardiology Consultant, Dr. Ameer Salih, Adult Cardiology Consultant and Dr. Ali Anwar, Adult Cardiology Anesthesia Consultant.

It is worth mentioning that this exceptional case was presented as a research paper two weeks ago in GulfPCR 2015 Dubai, where the audience praised the advanced levels reached by Saudi doctors in the  cardiac catheter field in particular and in the healthcare field in general.

Last but not least, this case also won international recognition and special tribute from Prof. Jean Fajadet from France and Prof. Simon Redwood from the United Kingdome who spoke highly of this achievement,  especially with the patient’s age and the fact that he was discharged 48 Hours after the procedure.
