A specialized multi-disciplinary team in the Division of Orthopedic Surgery at King Abdulaziz Medical City – Riyadh headed by Dr. Wazzan Al Juhani, Orthopedics Consultant and Assistant Professor at King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences (KSAU-HS), successfully performed a complex operation on an 8-year-old girl to fully remove a cancerous tumor located in her thigh while avoiding full limb amputation. In addition, the team installed a hip and knee joint replacement  that has a "press fit" feature to allow the bone to grow as the child gets older. Dr. Al Juhani pointed out that this is a very rare operation due to the difficulty of removing the entire tumor while maintaining the full limb.

Dr. Al Juhani also added that the child now is healthy and stable, as she underwent chemotherapy before the operation in order to control the tumor growth under the supervision of colleagues from the Pediatric Oncology Division where she will be completing her treatment as well.

On another note, Dr. Al Juhani thanked Allah the Almighty for the success of this rare operation, and extended his appreciation to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz for his unlimited support and the continuous follow-up of Prince Metib bin Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, Minister of National Guard. He also extended his gratitude to the members of the surgical team,  the Pediatric Oncology Division and the Department of Medical Imaging who all worked as a team to contribute in this patient's treatment.

It is worth mentioning  that the Division of Orthopedic Surgery at King Abdulaziz Medical City - Riyadh is considered  to be a reference to this specialty in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia due to its inclusion of high-level national cadres and their expertise in conducting rare and complex operations in the field of orthopedic surgery.
