
Based on the directive of the Custodian of The Two Holy Mosques King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, the medical and surgical team at King Abdulaziz Medical City-Riyadh carried out a successful separation for a three week old Saudi infant to remove a parasitic twin.
The parasitic twin was conjoined through the chest wall and consisted of incomplete upper and lower limbs and a part of the pelvic bone. The separation surgery lasted around two hours to remove the excess skin tissue and parasitic limbs. The muscles and skin were successful reattached.
Anesthetics and the artificial respiratory systems were immediately removed after the procedure. The baby entered the ICU to be observed for a day. Afterwards it will be transferred to the pediatric ward for three days. This is the 25th case of its kind.
