
A multi-disciplinary surgical and medical team headed by His Excellency the Minister of Health Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah succeeded in a separation procedure for the Moroccan twin Sa’edah and Aziza. The procedure which lasted for 13 hours and 20 minutes was conducted in King Abdulaziz Medical City- Riyadh.
“Sa’edah and Azeezah” arrived in Riyadh last month from Morocco; the twins underwent medical checkups and tests to set up a plan for the critial separation procedure because the twins were conjoined in the liver, pancreas, duodenum and the small intestines. The separation procedure was carried out in 7 phases with the participation of 25 surgeons and technicians. The 4th phase was separating the liver and was the most critical phase due to the complexity of the liver channels.
The father of the twins Umar Baali expressed his gratitude to the Custodian of the Two Holy King Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, who directed that the twins and their parents be welcomed. Furthermore, all the necessary procedures were arranged and that the parents be shown hospitably until the twins fully recover. The twins will undergo rehabilitation to ensure that all vital functions are running smoothly.
With this procedure, the number of separations carried out successfully in the National Guard Health Affairs reached 23 conducted by a specialized medical team that gained international fame under the leadership of His Excellency the Minister of Health in Saudi Arabia Dr. Abdullah Al-Rabeeah.
Moreover, Dr. Bandar Al Knawy, the Chief Executive Officer of the NGHA commended the directions and support of the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques and the Crown Prince in humanitarian areas regardless of religion and race as it is demonstrated in their efforts regarding conjoined twins.
