The conjoined twins multidisciplinary medical and surgical team scheduled the separation surgery for the Yemeni conjoined twins (Abduallah and Abdulrahman) in King Abdulaziz Medical City - Riyadh on Saturday: February 28th, 2015. The twins are joined in the pelvic area, and each twin has independent upper/ lower limbs, however, the twins share the small/ large intestines and the anal area. There is also an overlap in the urinary system and the pubic bone. This surgery is number (35) in a series of separation surgeries performed on Siamese twins.
Moreover, the multidisciplinary team confirmed that one twin suffers from congenital brain and heart defects that are life-threatening, while the second twin suffers from minor congenital brain defects.
The separation surgery will be performed through 9 stages and may last up to 12 and a half hours, with the participation of specialists in anesthesiology, pediatric, orthopedic, plastic surgery, and pediatrics urinary tract surgery as well as nursing and technical staff.
The success rate of this separation surgery is about 60-70% due to the congenital defects each twin suffers from.
Additionally, the multidisciplinary team expressed its gratitude and appreciation to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, the Crown Prince and the Deputy Crown Prince for their continuous support towards the health sector in the kingdom and to His Royal Highness Prince Miteb bin Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz, Minister of National Guard for his constant follow-up.
