Chief Operating Officer Professor Abdullah Al-Ammari launched the Medical Scientific Symposium of Social Services on Tuesday the 16th of February 2013, organized by King AbdulAziz Medical City - Jeddah and represented by the Department of Social Services under the title " Updates and Changes in Domestic Violence" parallel with the World Social Work Day. The symposium lasted for 2 Days and was held in Sultan Hall in Intercontinental Hotel – Jeddah.
The ceremony began with a reciting from holy Qura’an, followed by a speech given by Professor Mohammed al-Qahtani, a Social Worker in King Abdulaziz Medical - Jeddah where he highlighted that domestic violence is the most popular type of violence in spite of the lack of sufficient and accurate studies, however, the effects of domestic violence began to emerge significantly and all parts of society must cooperate to stop and control this phenomenon.
The Department of Social Services in King Abdulaziz Medical city – Jeddah through raising the issue of domestic violence in a scientific forum looks forward to highlighting significant changes and developments in this field which will ultimately enrich the community services work, overcome obstacles of applying the related laws and procedures and to combat violence in addition to activate civil society institutions and their role against violence and rehabilitation of its victims.
Then Associate Dean of Graduate Studies and Academic Affairs at King Saud bin Abdulaziz University for Health Sciences, Dr. Mansour al-Qurashi said that King Abdulaziz Medical city’s interest is not limited only to medical level but also extends to cover all aspects of comforting patients and their families.
Chief Operating Officer Professor Abdullah Al-Ammari also explained that social services currently go beyond providing its services to poor communities but extend to serve all the community on the basis of scientific principles, it is known that the main objective of Social Services is to develop social communication and properly build a healthy community. He also said that Social Services, philosophy is based on the individual’s value and his rights in practicing social activities around his family or the society as a whole.
Furthermore, it is worth noting that Social Services has multiple roles including preventive, therapeutic and developmental responsibilities, the preventive aspect depends on finding ways, strategies and appropriate social behavior fundamentals between community members, the Therapeutic aspect stems from studying the causes of individual, social and behavioral problems and finding proper solutions and finally, the developmental role is based on developing and supplying the individual and the society with means and ways to improve and reach the best levels.
At the end of the ceremony, a documentary film on the Social Services Department was presented, and finally the COO honored the speakers, and the participating institutions and departments.
