Dr. Ahmed Al Ferayan, Neurosurgery Consultant and Head of the multidisciplinary team assured that the twins (Rana and Ranim) are now stable 36 hours following the operation that took place on Sunday, 4th of May 2014 in King Abdulaziz Medical City, Ministry of National Guard - Health Affairs, Riyadh.
He added that their blood pressure, heart rate and fever have stabilized and both have normal vital signs. In addition, the twins are currently in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and are being fed through a gastric feeding tube.
Furthermore, Dr. Al Ferayan said that the twins will be kept under anesthesia for the next 4 days due to the absence of their parietal bones. After that, they will be gradually taken off the anesthesia.
Regarding the twins’ responses, Dr. Al Ferayan stated that there are some motor responses (movement of arms and legs) and both twins are responding to their parents; which indicates that they are stable and continuously improving.
In conclusion, the twins will be under 24 hour monitoring and observation to ensure that their status is improving smoothly and according to plan.
It is noteworthy to mention that this operation marks the 33rd of its kind in the Kingdom, and was a major challenge to the capabilities of the Saudi medical team due to the complexity of the case and the extent in which the twin’s heads were conjoined.
