A multidisciplinary team at King Abdulaziz Hospital for the National Guard- Al-Ahsa has successfully performed a unique surgery on a woman in her thirties who was suffering from severe pain as a result of prolapsed uterus and vagina. After examination and laboratory tests it was decided to use a modern vaginofixation technique where a synthetic mesh is placed between the bladder and the anterior wall of the vagina, and at the same time it’s delicately sutured to the sacrospinous ligament.
NGHA regional executive manager in the Eastern province, Dr. Ahmad Abdulrahman Al-Arfaj said: “this surgery is the first of its kind in applying this new technology and it is considered an additional achievement to King Abdulaziz Hospital for the National Guard- Al-Ahsa”.
Dr. Hani Kadoura, Chief of the medical team and OB/GYN consultant at King Abdulaziz Hospital pointed out that this is one of the unique cases treated by vaginofixation especially considering the age of the patient. He also added that the success rate of this surgery is about 90% compared to the side effects of traditional surgeries; indicating that this procedure was chosen to shorten the recovery time and reducing chances for complication and relapse.
The patient’s primary results indicate that she is in stabile condition. Dr. Kadoura stated that there is no danger with future pregnancy but it is preferred to delay the conception for at least two years, indicating that a caesarian section will be needed for delivery.
It should be noted that this surgery is not the first of its kind to apply synthetic mesh technology in King Abdulaziz Hospital, there were similar successful surgeries carried out to treat urinary incontinence by placing a synthetic strip through the urethra. The results were excellent with a success rate of 95 % and the patient was discharged with no complications the second day after the surgery.
