Surgery lasted 2 and a half hours
The Siamese twins multidisciplinary medical and surgical team successfully separated the Yemeni Parasitic Twin in a surgery that lasted 2 and a half hours on Wednesday 13th of January 2016 in King Abdullah Specialist Children's Hospital (KASCH) in King Abdulaziz Medical City – Riyadh. The multidisciplinary medical and surgical team was headed by His Excellency, Dr. Abdullah Al Rabeeah, Advisor at the Royal Court, Supervisor General of King Salman Humanitarian Aid and Relief Centre.
On this occasion, Dr. Al Rabeeah pointed that this conjoined twins separation marks the 37th of its kind for the Siamese Twins program, in which 15 members of the medical and surgical team represents various specialties: anesthesia, pediatric surgery, plastic surgery, nursing staff and technicians. The separation surgery was initiated by the anesthesia followed by the second phase, which entailed separating the parasitic twin. After that, the reconstruction of the abdomen took place followed by the reconstruction of the reproductive system as well as a hernia repair. Dr. Al Rabeeah also stated that the twin is now stable and within 2 days, he will be transferred to the pediatric ward.
Additionally, on behalf of the team, Dr. Al Rabeeah expressed his gratitude and appreciation to the Custodian of the Two Holy Mosques, King Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, the Crown Prince and the Deputy Crown Prince for their continuous support towards the health sector in the kingdom and to His Royal Highness Prince Mitib bin Abdullah bin Abdulaziz, Minister of National Guard for his constant follow-up.
