Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is a dental specialty that deals with the diagnosis and surgical
treatment
of diseases, deformities, defects, and traumatic injuries of the soft and hard tissues of the mouth,
jaws, and facial structures, and covers both functional and cosmetic aspects.
The scope of maxillofacial surgery ranges from minor to complex major surgeries on patients of
different
age groups ranging from newborns to the very elderly. It includes dentoalveolar surgery (surgical
treatment of disorders involving teeth and their supporting structures) including dental implants,
traumatic injuries of the maxillofacial structures, orthognathic surgery (surgical correction of
dentofacial discrepancies), maxillofacial pathology including oral cancer, craniofacial defects
including cleft lip and palate, surgical and non-surgical treatment of temporomandibular (jaw) joint
disorders, salivary gland surgery, reconstructive surgery, and cosmetic facial surgery.
Its services include inpatients (hospital admissions) as well as outpatient clinics, in addition to
operating rooms in both the Day Surgery Unit and main Operating Rooms. The division also provides
different levels of on-call services around the clock seven days a week. About 300 patients are seen
in
the outpatient clinics and approximately 15 patients are operated on under general anesthesia every
week.
Orthodontics
Orthodontics is a dentistry specialty which deals with diagnosis, prevention, and correction of
mal-positioned teeth and jaws, and misaligned bite patterns. It may also address the modification of
facial growth in growing patients.
The specialists in this division provide treatment to about
600 patients per week, having one or more of the following problems:
- Dental malocclusion: crowding, spacing, rotation, proclination, retroclination, Class II
malocclusion, Class III malocclusion
- Skeletal malocclusion: maxillary prognathia/retrognathia, mandibular prognathia/retrognathia,
facial
asymmetry
- Craniofacial anomalies: cleft lip and palate, other craniofacial syndromes
- Growing patients with skeletal problems: phase I treatment of growth modification
- Sleep apnea
- Orofacial pain
Services offered:
- Preventive Orthodontics
- Interceptive Orthodontics
- Corrective Orthodontics:
- Surgical Orthodontics
- Camouflage
- Comprehensive treatment
- Adjunctive Orthodontic treatment
Pediatric Dentistry
Pediatric Dentistry primarily focuses on infants, children, and adolescents. It encompasses most
areas of
adult dentistry but applies them to pediatric patients, with unique challenges requiring special
assessments and behavioral guidance techniques to deliver a positive and relatively pain-free
experience.
The division provides comprehensive dental treatment for approximately
300 patients per week at King Abdulaziz Dental Center (KADC), and about
70 cases per month under general anesthesia at King Abdullah Specialized Children
Hospital (KASCH). Some cardiac cases requiring dental treatment under general anesthesia and
intensive
cardiac monitoring are managed at King Abdulaziz Cardiac Center.
Treatment scope includes preventive programs, diagnosis and management of traumatized teeth, oral
pathology, oral surgical procedures, interceptive orthodontics, emergency treatments, and
comprehensive
oral health care.
Treatments may be provided under local anesthesia, nitrous oxide/sedation, or general anesthesia
depending on age, medical condition, behavior, and severity. Pediatric Dentistry Division also leads
residency programs and provides on-call services for inpatient clearance, trauma, and emergencies
24/7.
Periodontics
Periodontics branch of dentistry that is concerned with prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of
diseases
that affect the gums and supporting structures of the teeth. The periodontist typically sees severe,
complex cases that require a specialist rather than having the patient see a general dentist. Some
of
the procedures done are:
- Scaling and root planning
- Regenerative procedures to encourage new bone and tissue growth
- Crown lengthening and removal of excess gum tissue
- Dental implants
- Periodontal pocket reduction (osseous surgery)
Prosthodontics
Prosthodontics focuses on dental prosthesis. It involves diagnosis, treatment planning,
rehabilitation,
and maintenance of oral function, comfort, appearance, and health of patients with missing or
deficient
teeth or oral/maxillofacial tissues using biocompatible substitutes.
The specialty replaces missing teeth and tissues with crowns, bridges, and dentures, which may be
fixed
or removable, or supported by implants. Each treatment requires multiple steps and visits depending
on
case complexity.
Restorative Dentistry
Restorative Dentistry deals with diagnosis and integrated management of diseases of teeth and
supporting
structures, and rehabilitation of dentition to meet functional and aesthetic needs.
Types of specialists:
-
Restorative Dentist: Provides routine and complex restorative care using
advanced
knowledge and skills.
-
Advanced Restorative Dentist: Competent in operative dentistry, endodontics,
fixed
prosthodontics, and implant rehabilitation.
The division treats about
300 patients per week and provides on-call services and consultations to other
specialties.

developmental, or cognitive conditions, in both Operating Rooms and Dental Clinics. It diagnoses and
